Yahoo to Google: you just suck!

Story posted on: March 01, 2007

Google is just not conducive to create products according to Jeff Bonforte. During our conversation last Tuesday, the Yahoo director of Real-Time Communications told us a story about one of his best product manager that went to Google but eventually came back six months later, sick and tired of Google's chaotic culture.
Engineers rule the roost at Google. Sometimes it works out at a great advantage. Some other times it works out at a great disadvantage.
But more precisely,
As a product manager if I know what the consumers want and I go to the engineers and say we should do it this way, they just can say: NO. And that's it. And there's no way to escalate to the CEO, because he'll just say "go convince the engineers". And that's a different product cycle that i'm used to.
The Google way hardly works anyway... *wheewh*!,
It's been effective one time for search and it has never been effective again. They never invented a product other than Maps that even had a dent in the market. Google Mail has a slight dent but it's mostly a storage issue more than it is the navigation of mail.

Maybe a little too much. I always have my doubts when somebody has only bad things to say about a competitor!!! And after all, Google has been here for a while, and still is...Yahoo... well, so, isn\'t there room for everybody?

When have project managers ever known what consumers want? It\'s about time engineers were 1st class citizens. And the last part, what is he smoking? What has Google done that hasn\'t been effective? And they\'re only just getting started. It all sounds like sour grapes by a manager that got the status adjustment that really needs to happen at most other large corporations.

Ah, another of those Yahoo middle managers who will be part of the layoffs. It is thanks to people like Jeff that Yahoo is where it is today: at the bottom.
