HP to preserve the Voodoo DNA, says top strategist

Story posted on: April 04, 2007

At Dogpatch Studios, a movie studio in San Francisco, HP unveiled it's strategy in the PC gaming area. "You might not now it, but we are the leading provider of workstations to game content developers and the leading provider of blades and storage to big electronic gaming companies and the number one device leader (aka PCs) in casual gaming", said Shane Robison. The HP executive vice president and chief strategy and technology officer is probably refering to the fact that everyone played, at least once ,a video game like Solitaire on their PC which was most likely an Compaq/HP machine (being currently the number one in the world).... well, you do the math! And here what he had to say about the company's two pronged strategy in the gaming area focused on "complementing the existing gaming consoles versus trying to compete with them".

From the enterprise perspective,

In our enterprise group we have a team called GameOn which focuses strictly on the gaming community. Their goal is to go out and make sure that we have the world's leading servers, storage and infrastructure platform that is really at the hart of the gaming experience.
And from the PC side of the house,
In our Personal Systems Group (PSG) we have created the Gaming Group lead by Phil McKinney (also PSG's CTO) which comprises Voodoo, the number 1 lifestyle brand in the gaming industry. These are the best performance PCs that you can buy. A bit expensive but you can buy it. The Voodoo brand and culture will be preserve. Voodoo is going to continue to be a relatively independent team, designing these very sexy products that are custom designed for each individuals.

Whats all this talk about Voodoo DNA inside the box? What revolutionary technology or design did Voodoo actually bring to the party? The reality distortion generator is in full gear here. Voodoo was a small company from Calgary that built high end custom machines aimed at the gaming market. They were/are successful at creating a brand in that market space as a niche player with a strong and loyal customer base. Kind of like a microbrewery with its crafted beer and loyal drinkers. We all know what happens when the big boys buy them out. Something changes .. its not the same any more. Not saying this is the situation here however Voodoo DNA? - give me a break - your customers are smarter than this spin.
