Barcelona recent lack of performance and why AMD should start to worry

Story posted on: May 23, 2007

This morning I received a response from AMD on the 16 cores Barcelona system lackluster performance versus Intel's Clovertown V8 machine (8 cores) running the same POV-Ray benchmark. I'm still not convinced and until we actually can see/try out the "high-performance" quad-core chip AMD is referring to in their response, everything is still "up in the air"... and then, there's the 40% boost in performance over Clovertown that Intel is promising with its upcoming 45nm Penryn. I think it's now time for a reality check! Henri? (AMD's sales&marketing chief, in the picture)

The objective of our demo was to show performance scaling from our current dual-core processors to our upcoming quad-core processors within the same thermal envelope and drive home the point through a real-world demonstration that customers could expect to see 2x the performance without an increase in power consumption.
At some point before our launch you can plan on us showing a demo of our parts vs. Intel's high-performance processors.
One thing to note, the system we showed, while it was a 4P, it was running only 6GB of memory.
Another thing I might had is that the TDP (total design power) for Intel's chips is 150W versus 65W for AMD. And knowing power consumption is so important for CIOs, this is maybe a detail that is beeing overlooked. But of course, it's comparing apple and oranges, as TDP for AMD means max power consumption and that for Intel it means average power ;-)

Seems like things have backfired for AMD with this demo or AMD is deliberately trying to set the bar low so they can claim victory when their production parts roll out the assembly line and these scores end up being magically higher!

Why 6GB of memory and is this relevant due to power consumption?

The benchmark show only 1 Barcelonia microprocessor. This is not a 16 cores. It only a 4 core processor.PLease don\'t get confuse. It show that intel V8 is an 8 core and AMD Barcelonia only 4 core.Intel V8 will compete with AMD 4X4 AGENDA FX. So, I don\'t think the Intel V8 will be able to compete with AMD AGENDA FX.Because AGENDA FX cpu is more powerful than the Barcelonia. But AGENDA FX is a dual core cpu. I think you will see the first AGENDA FX on June.

This is just a boat load of crap. So does AMD want us to believe that they get perfect scaling on a memory-starved system? If the system were memory starved, the disk swapping would dominate the computation, and both systems would get identical performance.

The fact, I think, is that the Barcelona was running at a very low clock frequency (probably at 1.6 GHz). Then that begs the question, why the heck is it running that slow? Obviously, wouldn\'t you want to showcase the best thing that you have?

Re. the AMD boxes, were these on HT 3.0 or 1.0? The inquirer pointed out that these were HT 1.0 platforms. Definitely could be a big factor for the supposed \'loss\' to Intel

I\'ve made my decision I\'m jumping to AMD.
I\'ve seen enough, but I still like nVIDIA more.

Veil Sary: too much error in your comment to try to correct it...

More FUD from AMD and marketing spin. AMD had to show something working and since the bar is so low for them just showing working parts is enough to take the heat off for a month or so. However, if they slip their launch date AT ALL. They are screwed! Short AMD stock now!
