XPS 720 H2C: Dell's ultimate gaming machine

Story posted on: May 18, 2007

Just got off the call with Dell's desktop marketing manager, Ketan Pandya, who gave me the low down on the next iteration of Dell's XPS family of "extreme" PCs, the XPS 720 H2C available next week. The H2C moniker stands for Dell's liquid-cooling system to cool down the Intel quad-core processor (the video actually shows Dell CTO Kevin Kettler explaining the benefits of the 710/720 H2C cooling system). One good thing is that despite Dell shipping the PC already overclocked, the warranty will still applies if you decide to overclock the system even further. "There are safguards that will shut down the PC before it's too late", said Pandya. You will also be able to choose what software comes or not pre-loaded with the machine: Dell will pre-configure it in it's factory. That's for those who, like me, can't stand all the junkware that comes with a PC. So here's what's new on the 720 H2C:

- LightFX: fully customisable lighting with applications like iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc. The developer's kit also allow to add LightFX in games and other apps;
- nForce 680i SLI chipset and GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics chip;
- nTune support: to optimise/overclock and monitor motherboard, memory, CPU, chipset and graphics processor;
- Corsair memory: it's an 800MHz memory but will overclock to 1066MHz;
- Windows Vista available;
- Hard Disk Drive RAID 5 support

And pricing? Well the XPS 720 H2C will start at around $6,000 or so (more or less like the 710 H2C) and as high as "the customer's dream"!
