[SCOOP] Google to kill Google Video for YouTube

Story posted on: May 17, 2007

Google Video as we know it is dying slowly but surely... i.e. as a video store a la iTunes where you can buy copyrighted content like TV shows... Well... I guess the writing was in wall since Google acquired YouTube last October, and also since Jennifer Feikin, the brain behind Google Video's start and "crash", left the company quickly thereafter!

But okay. On Google Video you can upload videos as long as you want. Whereas on YouTube, the videos are limited to 10 minutes. But that's really just an artificial limit that YouTube could increase anytime they want. So instead of wondering all night long on how Google Video and YouTube could co-exist, I thought I'll ask Google's Search Products & User Experience VP, Marissa Mayer herself to share her thoughts on this very existential question:

"YouTube is clearly a better platform, it offers more choices [keeping a video private or public]. There are some hosting benefits on Google Video like uploading longer videos that we're trying to transfer over to YouTube. But I have the feeling YouTube will ultimately become the hosting, sort of social network site for videos.

You'll go to look watch videos and share with your friends. I think over time you'll see Google Video swinging more that what you expect which is Google meaning search, search over video become the site where if you got a pointed need you'll to get it from there but if you really want to browse, share, explore, host, upload... that kind of thing it will be more towards YouTube."
So to summarise:
- Whatever advantage Google Video had over YouTube, i.e. content or feature-wise (longer videos, capacity to eventually sell videos...), that will ultimately be transitioned to YouTube;
- Instead, Google Video will be to videos what Google Images is to images on the Internet or Google News to news i.e. a vertical search site/index crawling videos on the Internet.
