At the
Where 2.0 conference here in San Jose,
Where (a product from
uLocate) showed their widget platform enabling developers to rapidly create location-based widgets for GPS-enabled cell phones. At this point, the Where widget-browser only works with 18 Java Sprint phones but the company expects to add support for more operators in North America as well as the Qualcomm/BREW and Windows Mobile platforms. For $2.99, users get access to "all", now more than 20, Where's widgets like the GPS Twitter, Yahoo local weather, Burger King or Eventful. However, Where suggests to suscribe to an unlimited data plan, because everytime you're accessing the widgets, you are going over the phone’s network.
"For the developers, it's a very short development cycle. They just need to create the widgets before it appears on the users' cell phone. We take care to get our platform certified by the carriers", said Markus Wuersch, a developer at Where.
