Apple's problem? Steve's bigger than life EGO!

Story posted on: June 13, 2007

So now Apple chief is going after the Firefox browser/open source community with it's minimalist Safari browser. I just can't think of a reason why a Mac user will use it, so even less a Windows one! Quickly after receiving my MacBook, the first thing I've dowloaded was... Firefox! Why? For example, Safari is not supported by Google Docs (and will never be!), that I use all the time; it's a closed system a-la-Apple with very limited number of plug-ins, and I could go on and on and on...

So now the real question is why is Apple insisting on supporting this loosing horse? I actually can think of two good reasons:

1) For the tens, perhaps hundreds, of millions of dollars that Apple could make sending out traffic to search engines like Google or Yahoo. Mozilla/Firefox makes good money out of it, possibly 90% of its income, why can't "the company that started the personal computer revolution!" do it too? Well, they're sure going to try it now with Safari for Windows. But what if it fails? You mean like QuickTime? OK, everyone who downloads/uses iTunes and/or buys the Apple TV have to put up with QuickTime. But what's going the Trojan horse for Safari in Windows? iTunes? Don't think so. Better design/performance/[distorted reality here]... I don't think either. So? "There you have it. Boom".
2) To satisfy his Jobsness larger than life EGO! It worked in the past e.g. the Mac, iMac, iPod... why not again? Perhaps because the "spell" is gone ;-)
The iPhone is Apple's PlayStation 3 fiasco
Same thing with the iPhone. We are 2 weeks away from the US launch. Yes, people are going to line up in front of Apple/AT&T stores for hours to get one. But, and mark my word as I'll come back on the topic regularly, the iPhone will not be a commercial success. Why will it be? Just see how the Sony PlayStation 3 flopped. Unless of course, you had the disposable income to afford this fashion statement. And for sure, there are a lot of those people in this world. But first, you should consider some alternative knock-offs like the LG-Prada one! Moreover, I just can't think that the Nokia/Motorola/Samsung/[place your favourite phone manufacturer here] will just look at Apple coming into their crowded turf and wait on the sideline.

So what's next for Apple?
The iPod market is saturating. Selling/renting movies/TV shows? Sure. But it won't be big... the big players i.e Hollywood is not going to get screwed like they were with their music businesses. "If you screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me!"
Selling more music perhaps? Cool, but low margins. What about Macs? Well, that sounds like a good idea to me: like in refreshing laptops/desktops a bit faster, perhaps expanding the PC line a bit, more monitors, etc... just listen for your customers... for once... I'm sure they'll love to share their thoughts in what they'd like to buy next!
