McAfee Avert Labs Day: the new trends of Internet security
Story posted on: June 19, 2007
According to McAfee research lab, phishing is on the rise with a 784% increase in web sites in the first quarter of 2007. Durning the presentation of this morning, we had a very instructive demo that showed how a password stealer rootkit can install itself in stealth mode when the user just types a website address in the browser. This popular way of distributing malwares is hard to detect because the executable disappears in seconds from the hardrive and runs from the memory (RAM).
Phishing was traditionnaly targeting financial institutions but McAfee experts are predicting a new kind of attacks on Web 2.0 social websites like MySpace or Wikipedia (well, it's already happening).
The next trends will be phishing attacks via VoiP, mobile devices, video downloads and IM spam. The upcoming Iphone will increase hackers’ interest in coding viruses for Mac OS. (that’s the bad news, I have a Mac!)
