Story posted on: June 12, 2007

One of the critical component in lowering the power consumption of a computer is the power supply, insists Lakshmi Mandyam. According to ColdWatt's marketing director, the company's power supplies already exceeds the 2008 level set at 90% efficiency per power supply, by the Climate Savers Computing Initiative launched today. Of course, these power supplies comes with a 10 to 15% premium over the cost of current parts but according to Mandyam, "payback is within months". Moreover, Coldwatt is currently demonstrating 2009 level power supplies (close to 95% for servers).

There 3 major technologies when you talk about power supplies:
- the magnetic technology that goes into the transformers;
- the control;
- and the switching.
Main customers for ColdWatt are Intel, Supermicro and Tayan. Main competitors are Delta, Aztec, Emerson, Netwok Power. ColdWatt is based in Dallas, TX and designs its power supplies in Dallas and Bangalore, India and manufactures them in Shenzhen, China.
