Apple To Launch iPhone 2.0 in June with Extensive Enterprise Features. Released Beta SDK (video)

Story posted on: March 06, 2008

Today, Apple invited the media to its Cupertino headquarters in California to witness the launch of the iPhone SDK and its new enterprise features. We'll be updating this page during and after the end of the presentation with more details and videos. The webcast of the event can be found on Apple's web site here.

Let the show begin
The event is about to begin. The Town Hall room in Apple's building 4 is completely full with photographers and videographers in the back, "traditional" media and "guests" in the middle and Apple execs in the front seats including Sr. VP of Industrial Design, Jonathan Ive and Bertrand Serlet, the Sr. VP of Software Engineering but also Salesforce.com CEO, Marc Benioff.

Some iPhone statistics to warm up the audience
Steve Jobs, in his usual black turtle and jeans uniform started with some statistics about the iPhone, 8 months after its launch:

* In Q4, the iPhone is 28% of the U.S. smartphone market share behind RIM (41%) and ahead of Motorola (9%) and Palm (7%)
* iPhone garnered 71% of U.S. mobile browser market way ahead of Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer (12%) and Palm (9%)

iPhone 2.0 includes enterprise features, to launch in June. But what about the new consumer features?
He are the main new key features "enterprise customers" have requested Apple to include in the next iPhone release, if its want to make the iPhone a big hit in corporate America. Interestingly, nothing has been said on the "consumer" features of the 2.0 release except perhaps for an upcoming parental control feature:
* Push email
* Push contacts
* Push calendar
* Global Address List
* Certificates and Identities
* WPA2/802.1x
* Tools to enforce security policies
* More VPN protocols
* Device configuration tools
* Tool to remotely wipe the iPhone
Apple already started to test on-site the new iPhone enterprise features in some enterprises like Genentech, Nike, Stanford University and Disney.
