[CTIA Wireless] Flash Memory Prices Falling Inspite Mobile Business Boom, Kingston says

Story posted on: March 31, 2008

At Showstoppers, I met again with David Leong, PR manager at memory maker Kingston who was showing a 1 GB microSD kit (card+reader) with 2 songs, wallpapers and videos from latin singer Ricky Martin. The kit is exclusively available online at Amazon.com for about $10. MicroSD cards are Kingston's best selling category way ahead of USB drives and traditional DRAM products, showing the growth of the mobile/wireless market.
"We now ship more microSD cards per month than any other piece of memory in the Kingston line. We make over 2,000 products... That's proof that the mobile business is booming", said David Leong.

But the real news was that Leong expects prices for flash memory products, like USB drives and memory cards (SD, CompactFlash...) to drop even this year.

"It's a great time for consumers to buy because the prices are so low. Not to so good for memory makers like Kingston because it hurts the margins", added Leong.

So should you wait or buy now?

Well flash memory producers are currently readjusting i.e. cutting their production plans so it will probably take a couple more quarters for the balance between demand and supply to stabilise.

Capacity-wise, Leong expects an 8 GB microSD HC (high capacity) cards coming soon. However, those HC cards will not be backward compatible with older standard SD devices.
