Intel To Unveil New AVX Graphics Extensions At Next IDF (video)

Story posted on: March 17, 2008

At the upcoming Intel Developer Forum next month, the chip maker will provide details on its next set of graphics instruction extensions, dubbed AVX (Advanced Vector Extension). It will not replace SSE. On the contrary it will add to SSE, just like SIMD added to 387 to create SSE. AVX will notably add new floating point extensions with 256-bits vectors (from 128). AVX will be in the Sandy Bridge chip generation and beyond that will not be on the market before 2010. This is super long term, Moore's way!
"Think of it as the next thing after SSE... The concept and the specifics will be discussed at IDF", said Intel VP, Stephen Smith.
