[View From The Top] McAfee CEO: You Should Be Scared Of the Internet (video)

Story posted on: April 09, 2008

At the security CEOs panel this morning, McAfee's chief predicted more dangers for consumers surfing the Internet and enterprises online presence. I know that security is its daily bread and the more people buy its antivirus and such, the better for him and the security industry. But I also think that DeWalt, as a CEO of one of the world's top security firm, could use some more subtlety than simply just spreading fear and uncertainty. We know, it's a dangerous cyber world, so provide us with solutions and products that really work, that really protect us from all of that.
"You should be scared... As Americans we spent the last 7 years really protecting our physical security environments... It's really hard to think we are not safer perhaps from a physical security world... It's not just the amount of malware that we're seeing on the edges, it's the type of sophisticated attacks that are happening, government on government. The private sector is really vulnerable in a lot of corporate worlds that we live in. And as consumers we are not in a safer place. I'm convinced that this is just the beginning of a multi-year segment where we try to retool our infrastructure. Whereas it's the utilities, power, gas, electric, nuclear... most of our security systems for big corporations is very vulnerable. Our department of defense, the UK ministry of defense, ;large governments around the world have really stepped up their cyber security, helping consumers be safer. But corporations have not as much. And this is a scary world that we live in. And as a consumer, as a concerned citizen myself... it's only going to get worse quite frankly", says DeWalt.

Not only, it's easier to steal online than is to physically steal! Not only that it's safer and cheaper

"There's hardly any cases, any legistlation involved with cybercrime. The ability to prosecute across borders, across States, across governments is nearly impossible... It's creating a festered environment for crime to occur at a very low cost", adds DeWalt.
