With Centrino 2, Intel Lowers Power Consumption, Brings Quad-Core to Laptops. But Still Lags AMD Puma in Graphics (video)

Story posted on: July 14, 2008

[Updated] Whenever Mooly Eden, Intel's Corporate vice-president and general manager of the company's Mobile Platforms Group, speaks it's sure to be entertaining. And today was no exception.
Check out some of his "jokes" after the jump, although some are actually quite offensive to women. But aside a colleague of mine, the other 2 women present at the event that I've mentioned it about (one from Intel and the other from Xohn) didn't really see this as a problem. So let me know what you think?

Just before the event, I asked Eden about the month delay in shipping Intel's 5th generation mobile platform, Centrino 2, his answer came right from the hart.
"It's a black eye for us. But now it's behind us and we're shipping", Eden admits.

Take Away: Upcoming Quad-Core mobile chip, low power Centrinos but graphics delay

I have mixed feelings from the Centrino 2 launch. I was impressed by the low power chips, down to 25 watts from 35 watts, and by the upcoming availability in 90 days of a quad-core version targeted at gamers and for workstation-like applications. What Eden refers to as the "Beast".

In terms of graphics, and especially integrated and 3D graphics, Intel still lags AMD's Puma platform in performance and availability. Because, inspite the very impressive video game and blu-ray demo using Intel's integrated graphics, as well as the switchable graphics feature where you can switch in about a minute - but without rebooting the computer - between Intel's integrated graphics or a discrete graphic from ATI and soon Nvidia, that chipset will not be available until August, perhaps later. For big OEMs like Dell or HP, that means no competitive i.e. cheap and performant Centrino 2 machines for the back to school season. Hopefully, consumers will still want/need one by the Christmas season! The video below gives more detail on the Centrino 2 platform.

Switchable Graphics: a way to use a higher performance graphics chip while plugged-in

WiFi Link 5000: 802.11n top to bottom... finally! A 450 Mbps MIMO version expected later this year. Eden expects the mini-card version of this new WiFi chipset to be in a next generation MacBook Air. The WiMAX/WiFi card is coming in the second of this year.

Intel Mobile Chipset Express 45 supports HDMI and DDR3.

Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile Processor X9100: a Mobile Quad-Core Beast!

The video game demo was impressive. It was running on the above mentioned Quad-Core chip using a dual ATI Crossfire! Don't try this at home with an Intel integrated graphics... It won't work!

Intel claims that you could run a full 2 hours blu-ray movie on one battery charge *and* with the Intel integrated graphics chipset. Will have to try that out!

And finally some funny moments... including the controversial sexist jokes!
